The Wisdom of Davey Crockett

Those of you who know me, know that I read quite a bit. I read this the other day and it inspired the hell out of me. It is from, "The Life of Colonel David Crockett" by Edward Sylvester Ellis. We all know good 'ol Davey Crockett from stories of the American frontier and The Alamo, but this struck me as one of his greatest achievements. He knew when to admit that he was wrong. I wish more politicians today would remember that they are accountable to the people. The message here applies just as much today is it did in years-gone-by.

"Several years ago I was one evening standing on the steps of the Capitol with some other members of Congress, when our attention was attracted by a great light over in Georgetown. It was evidently a large fire. We jumped into a hack and drove over as fast as we could. When we got there I went to work, and I never worked as hard in my life as I did there for several hours. But, in spite of all that could be done, many houses were burned and many families made houseless, and, besides, some of them had lost all but the clothes they had on. The weather was very cold, and when I saw so many women and children suffering, I felt that something ought to be done for them, and everybody else seemed to feel the same way."

"The next morning a bill was introduced appropriating $20,000 for their relief. We put aside all other business, and rushed it through as soon as it could be done. I said everybody felt as I did. That was not quite so; for, though they perhaps sympathized as deeply with the sufferers as I did, there were a few of the members who did not think we had the right to indulge our sympathy or excite our charity at the expense of anybody but ourselves. They opposed the bill, and upon its passage demanded the yeas and nays. There were not enough of them to sustain the call, but many of us wanted our names to appear in favor of what we considered a Praiseworthy measure, and we voted with them to sustain it. So the yeas and nays were recorded, and my name appeared on the journals in favor of the bill."

"The next summer, when it began to be time to think about the election, I concluded I would take a scout around among the boys of my district. I had no opposition there, but, as the election was some time off, I did not know what might turn up, and I thought it was best to let the boys know that I had not forgot them, and that going to Congress had not made me too proud to go to see them."

"So I put a couple of shirts and a few twists of tobacco into my saddle-bags, and put out. I had been out about a week, and had found things going very smoothly, when, riding one day in a part of my district in which I was more of a stranger than any other, I saw a man in a field plowing and coming toward the road. I gauged my gait so that we should meet as he came to the fence. As he came up I spoke to the man. He replied politely, but, as I thought, rather coldly, and was about turning his horse for another furrow, when I asked him if he could give me a chew of tobacco."

"Yes," said he, "such as we make and use in this part of the country; but it may not suit your taste, as you are probably in the habit of using better."

"With that he pulled out of his pocket part of a twist in its natural state, and handed it to me. I took a chew, and handed it back to him. He turned to his plow, and was about to start off. I said to him: "Don't be in such a hurry, my friend; I want to have a little talk with you, and get better acquainted," He replied:

"I am very busy, and have but little time to talk, but if it does not take too long, I will listen to what you have to say."

"I began: "Well, friend, I am one of those unfortunate beings called candidates, and---"

"Yes, I know you; you are Colonel Crockett. I have seen you once before, and voted for you the last time you were elected. I suppose you are out electioneering now, but you had better not waste your time or mine. I shall not vote for you again."

"This was a sockdologer. I had been making up my mind that he was one of those churlish fellows who care for nobody but themselves, and take bluntness for independence. I had seen enough of them to know there is a way to reach them, and was satisfied that if I could get him to talk to me I would soon have him straight. But this was entirely a different bundle of sticks. He knew me, had voted for me before, and did not intend to do it again. Something must be the matter; I could not imagine what it was. I had heard of no complaints against me, except that some of the dandies about the village ridiculed some of the wild and foolish things that I too often say and do, and said that I was not enough of a gentleman to go to Congress. I begged him to tell me what was the matter.

"Well, Colonel, it is hardly worth while to waste time or words upon it. I do not see how it can be mended, but you gave a vote last winter which shows that either you have not capacity to understand the Constitution, or that you are wanting in the honesty and firmness to be guided by it. In either case you are not the man to represent me. But I beg your pardon for expressing it in that way. I did not intend to avail myself of the privilege of the constituent to speak plainly to a candidate for the purpose of insulting or wounding you. I intend by it only to say that your understanding of the Constitution is very different from mine; and I will say to you what, but for my rudeness, I should not have said, that I believe you to be honest."

"Thank you for that, but you find fault with only one vote. You know the story of Henry Clay, the old huntsman and the rifle; you wouldn't break your gun for one snap."

"No, nor for a dozen. As the story goes, that tack served Mr. Clay's purpose admirably, though it really had nothing to do with the case. I would not break the gun, nor would I discard an honest representative for a mistake in judgment as a mere matter of policy. But an understanding of the Constitution different from mine I cannot overlook, because the Constitution, to be worth anything, must be held sacred, and rigidly observed in all its provisions. The man who wields power and misinterprets it is the more dangerous the more honest he is."

"I admit the truth of all you say, but there must be some mistake about it, for I do not remember that I gave any vote last winter upon any constitutional question."

"No, Colonel, there's no mistake. Though I live here in the backwoods and seldom go from home, I take the papers from Washington and read very carefully all the proceedings of Congress. My papers say that last winter you voted for a bill to appropriate $20,000 to some sufferers by a fire in Georgetown. Is that true!"

"Certainly it is, and I thought that was the last vote for which anybody in the world would have found fault with."

"Well, Colonel, where do you find in the Constitution any authority to give away the public money in charity!"

"Here was another sockdologer; for, when I began to think about it, I could not remember a thing in the Constitution that authorized it. I found I must take another tack, so I said:

"Well, my friend; I may as well own up. You have got me there. But certainly nobody will complain that a great and rich country like ours should give the insignificant sum of $20,000 to relieve its suffering women and children, particularly with a full and overflowing Treasury, and I am sure, if you had been there, you would have done just as I did."

"It is not the amount, Colonel, that I complain of; it is the principle. In the first place, the Government ought to have in the Treasury no more than enough for its legitimate purposes. But that has nothing to do with the question. The power of collecting and disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be entrusted to man, particularly under our system of collecting revenue by a tariff, which reaches every man in the country, no matter how poor he may be, and the poorer he is the more he pays in proportion to his means. What is worse, it presses upon him without his knowledge where the weight centers, for there is not a man in the United States who can ever guess how much he pays to the Government. So you see, that while you are contributing to relieve one, you are drawing it from thousands who are even worse off than he. If you had the right to give anything, the amount was simply a matter of discretion with you, and you had as much right to give $20,000,000 as $20,000. If you have the right: to give to one, you have the right to give to all; and, as the Constitution neither defines charity nor stipulates the amount, you are at liberty to give to any and everything which you may believe, or profess to believe, is a charity, and to any amount you may think proper. You will very easily perceive, what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other. No, Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity. Individual members may give as much of their own money as they please, but they have no right to touch a dollar of the public money for that purpose. If twice as many houses had been burned in this county as in Georgetown, neither you nor any other member of Congress would have thought of appropriating a dollar for our relief. There are about two hundred and forty members of Congress. If they had shown their sympathy for the sufferers by contributing each one week's pay, it would have made over $13,000. There are plenty of wealthy men in and around Washington who could have given $20,000 without depriving themselves of even a luxury of life. The Congressmen chose to keep their own money, which, if reports be true, some of them spend not very creditably; and the people about Washington, no doubt, applauded you for relieving them from the necessity of giving by giving what was not yours to give. The people have delegated to Congress, by the Constitution, the power to do certain things. To do these, it is authorized to collect and pay moneys, and for nothing else. Everything beyond this is usurpation, and a violation of the Constitution."

"I have given you," continued Crockett, "an imperfect account of what he said. Long before he was through, I was convinced that I had done wrong. He wound up by saying:

"So you see, Colonel, you have violated the Constitution in what I consider a vital point. It is a precedent fraught with danger to the country, for when Congress once begins to stretch its power beyond the limits of the Constitution, there is no limit to it, and no security for the people. I have no doubt you acted honestly, but that does not make it any better, except as far as you are personally concerned, and you see that I cannot vote for you."

"I tell you I felt streaked. I saw if I should have opposition, and this man should go to talking, he would set others to talking, and in that district I was a gone fawn-skin. I could not answer him, and the fact is I was so fully convinced that he was right, I did not want to. But I must satisfy him, and I said to him:

"Well, my friend, you hit the nail upon the head when you said I had not sense enough to understand the Constitution. I intended to be guided by it, and thought I had studied it fully. I have heard many speeches in Congress about the powers of Congress, but what you have said here at your plow has got more hard, sound sense in it, than all the fine speeches I ever heard. If I had ever taken the view of it that you have, I would have put my head into the fire before I would have given that vote, and if you will forgive me and vote for me again, if I ever vote for another unconstitutional law I wish I may be shot."

Yes boys and girls, that is the honest to God's truth. It applies as much today as it did in that time. You can look at this any way you like: welfare, Katrina compensation, or earmark and pork barrel spending. The government has no right to tax you for your hard work, and give it to others. If you don't believe me, re-read the Constitution. I'm sure you haven't done that since the eighth grade anyway. It will be good for you. Yes, I know about the 16th Ammendment, but that is income tax to be used for government purposes, NOT SOCIAL PROGRAMS THAT DONT WORK!

Do I need to continue saying this? Forced charity through taxation is Socialism!!! The next time your Senator or Congressman votes for earmarks and pork in your area, votes to increase welfare handouts, or votes your tax dollars into someone else's hands; send them a copy of "The Life of Colonel David Crockett." And then, do everything you can to vote the sorry S.O.B. out of office next time around! These people work for us, its time they started being accountable to us.

Wall Street’s Confidence In Our President Elect

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MY MYSPACE BLOG NOVEMBER 7, 2008

I just finished watching live coverage of a press conference held by our President Elect on Fox News. Given our current economic state, Fox had the Dow ticker up on screen as this was going on. How convenient. What I saw was amazing. Every time Obama was speaking about the economy, the Dow dropped dramatically. When he was on other topics, there was a gradual rise; only to be followed by another sharp drop when he went back to economics.

I know that there are a million different things that can effect the fluctuations of the market. I just thought it was telling. Co-incidence or not, I don't think there is much faith out there for our new President Elect.

Lemmings of Change

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MY MYSPACE BLOG NOVEMBER 5, 2008

Well the nation has voted, and it looks like the worst has happened. I am almost speechless...almost What happened to you America? I thought you were smarter than this! I really can not understand how Obama won this election. As I stated in my previous blog post: this election was not about Democrat or Republican, or Liberal or Conservative; it was about Freedom or Socialism. That's it, plain and simple. But, like lemmings running over a cliff, you went out there and voted for this total clown anyway; and you wont see the edge until it is too late.

Here is the "Change" you can expect:

-Rewriting of the Constitution-Appointment of two to three ultra-liberal supreme court justices (for life)

-Abolition of gun ownership for private citizens (loss of the right to bear arms)

-Re-institution of the "Fairness Doctrine" which targets and shuts down talk radio, and only allows for secular progressive news programs. (loss of freedom of speech)

-Elimination of secret voting in Union ballots (loss of privacy)

-The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) - eliminates ALL restrictions for abortions. Which means your 12 year old daughter can get one anytime, anywhere; and you as the parent: A: don't have the right to know and B: can't do a thing about it.

-Socialization of your 401K funds (take the penalty now or say bye bye to it)

-Socialization of your paycheck (remember, don't work too hard because you won't be the one who gets to spend or save it)

-Appeasement to the United Nations (opens the way for a one-world government)

-Appeasement to radical Islam (plan on multiple attacks as per Joe Biden who has been "in the know about terrorism for a dozen years")

-Cut and run in Iraq (further spread of radical Islam)

-Decrease in our military force strength and spending, which will hinder our victory in Afghanistan and make us more susceptible to further attacks.

-Decrease in our nuclear weapons capabilities, while other nations like Russia build theirs up.

-Yearly terrorist attacks on our nation that equal or dwarf 9/11. No military response will be made.-Reparations for slavery. I want every single person who voted for Obama to think long and hard on this: you have never owned slaves, but you will be paying for the reparations!

-Major education reform that dictates exactly what will be taught to children in private/religious schools and home schooled children. You as the parent will not have a say in this.

-New laws defining "Separation of church and state" that go as far as fining or disbanding churches for speaking out against the administration.

-Tax increases in ALL tax brackets. Don't worry, you wont notice. You are the same morons who think you "get money back" every year.

-Loss of jobs across the country. When you over-tax the employer, he always cuts his losses from the bottom up.

-Price hikes on all goods and services across the nation. Again, when you over-tax the employer, he always cuts his losses from the bottom up.

-And last but not least, severe economic depression followed by hyperinflation.

Now, I know I may have used some big words that you kool-aide drinkers are not familiar with. Its OK, just put your faith in your new messiah and he will take care of you. As for me, don't come knocking on my door when the Schumer hits the fan. You had the longest election in our nation's history to make your minds up, and you chose poorly. There is nothing left in America but mindless lemmings, running blindly towards the cliff to the zombie death-beat of the drums of socialism. You should all be thankful that there are still good people out there who care, we might just try to fix this when its all done and over with.

Genesis 18:22-33

22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the LORD. 23Then Abraham drew near and said, "Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" 26And the LORD said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake."
27Abraham answered and said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." 29Again he spoke to him and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." 30Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." 31He said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." 32Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it." 33And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

My observations just a few days before the election

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MY MYSPACE BLOG OCTOBER 31, 2008

First and foremost, I will start off by saying that I base my political views on my Christian religion. I do not apologize for this, as I see it as the right thing to do. Someone said to me recently that sooner or later a discussion about Christianity will always drop to the level of someone crying hypocrite and pointing fingers. I understand this, and I know why.

From the outside looking in, Christians must seem like the most hypocritical people on the planet. They speak of purity, but sooner or later, they do something that goes against the way they profess to live. And someone is always there to point the finger and say "I told you so, he is no better than the rest of them. Just another hypocritical Christian."

But, from the insiders view, the Christian's view, it is a perfectly normal thing. You see, the Christian understands that all men are fallible. That is the most basic tenant of Christianity. Everyone sins and falls short from time to time. No one can live a perfect life, it is just not possible. The difference is, the Christian accepts that what he has done is wrong, the non-Christian makes excuses about why it shouldn't have been wrong in the first place.

Now that I have that out of the way, I want to go into some of my observations on this election. I want to start off with two quotes:

"When the people discover that they can vote money for themselves from the government, it will mean the end of the republic." -Ben Franklin

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." -John F.Kennedy

Go back and re-read those quotes again. Take some time to mull them over and really let it sink in. I like to think that I have answered JFK's calling. The majority of my life has been devoted to public service. As a child I was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts. I carried out yearly community service projects and did quite a few things to make life a little better in my small town. When I was old enough, I joined the Marine Corps. I gave eight years of blood, sweat, and tears to my country, and I have a combat tour as an infantryman to remember for the rest of my life. I now have a job that serves the United States at home and abroad. I tell you this, not to boast my own ego, but to let you know that I care about this country. I believe in it through and through. It is the best country on Earth, and I can say that from experience. I have been all over, and I have seen just how bad things can be.

This election is not about Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal. This election is about FREEDOM OR SOCIALISM. There it is, plain and simple. I have seen every dirty card in the deck played in this election. The race card, the poverty card, the class warfare card, and any other "card" that MSNBC has decided to come up with a name for. I am sick to death with the prospect of a four or eight year Obama presidency. I don't know if America can handle it.

The media has done a really great job of turning the focus of this election off of foreign policy and experience, and onto the economy. Obama does not have the experience to lead. Obama has the absolute worst ideas imaginable on foreign policy. But, we already knew that didn't we? Lets talk about the economy. Go back and read that first quote again. We are seeing this right now, in this election. "Screw big business, Screw big oil, they should pay more taxes!" Anyone with even a small bit of understanding will know that the more you tax employers, the more jobs they are going to cut to keep their bottom line in place. I'm not saying that is right, I'm just stating the obvious. That is not even mentioning the fact that the rich pay more taxes in this country than anyone else anyway.

Here are some numbers to support that claim.. http://usgovinfo. about. com/od/incometaxandtheirs/a/whopaysmost. htm-

In 2002 the latest year of available data, the top 5 percent of taxpayers paid more than one-half (53.8 percent) of all individual income taxes, but reported roughly one-third (30.6 percent) of income.-The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid 33.7 percent of all individual income taxes in 2002. This group of taxpayers has paid more than 30 percent of individual income taxes since 1995. Moreover, since 1990 this group's tax share has grown faster than their income share.-Taxpayers who rank in the top 50 percent of taxpayers by income pay virtually all individual income taxes. In all years since 1990, taxpayers in this group have paid over 94 percent of all individual income taxes. In 2000, 2001, and 2002, this group paid over 96 percent of the total.-Treasury Department analysts credit President Bush's tax cuts with shifting a larger share of the individual income taxes paid to higher income taxpayers. In 2005, says the Treasury, when most of the tax cut provisions are fully in effect (e.g., lower tax rates, the $1,000 child credit, marriage penalty relief), the projected tax share for lower-income taxpayers will fall, while the tax share for higher-income taxpayers will rise.-The share of taxes paid by the bottom 50 percent of taxpayers will fall from 4.1 percent to 3.6 percent.-The share of taxes paid by the top 1 percent of taxpayers will rise from 32.3 percent to 33.7 percent.-The average tax rate for the bottom 50 percent of taxpayers falls by 27 percent as compared to a 13 percent decline for taxpayers in the top 1 percent.

The class warfare has to stop! Plain and simple. Obama wants you to think that he is going to magically fix all of your problems. He even told Joe the Plumber: "My attitude is that if the economy's good for folks from the bottom up, it's gonna be good for everybody. I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody." Who does he think he is, Robin Hood? Spread the wealth around? Ladies and gentlemen, spreading the wealth around is socialism in its truest form. What does that do to personal inititive? What is the benifet to doing better in life and trying to get ahead? Here is an example that I received via email that should drive home my point:

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference--just imagine the coincidence. When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful. At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient needed money more.I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application...OR...IS IT REDISTRIBUTION OF SOMEONE ELSE'S WEALTH THAT'S A GREAT IDEA..............or just a fools game?

This country was set up to give everyone the oportunity to succeed. If you want to become rich, you can become rich. If you want to live a middle class life style, you can do that too. But neither of those dreams will ever come true for you if you waste all of your time making excuses for yourself. There are pleanty of success stories out there. Thousands of people have gone from rags to riches in this country, and they did it with a positive attitude. You cant blame all of your woes on "The Rich." If you are not getting ahead, the only person you have to blame is yourself.

Obama wants to "level that playing field". He wants to take more money from the people who have been successful, give it to the government, and then dole it back out in the form of government run social programs. This creates what is called the "Nanny State". Dont worry about anything, the government will give you everything you need. Once you become dependant upon the government, you are more inclined to start checking more and more of your personal freedoms at the door. Everyone wants something for nothing. Obama is counting on you want that something to come from him.

Now youre probably saying to yourself, "Wait, didn't he start this out saying he was a Christian? Isnt part of being a Christian helping the poor? Doesnt he care about poor people?" My response to that is, I do care. I donate 10% of my gross earnings to charity. Notice I said gross not net. That is money before taxes. To me that is quite a bit of money. I think that there should be programs for people who need help, but I think it is wrong to make those people so dependant upon that help that they can not do anything for themselves.

Forced charity through taxation is socialism!

Do I think that McCain has all the right answers? No. I'm not a kool aide drinker. I am capable of independant thought. But I think his plan is a hundred times better than Obama's. Personally, the only tax plan that makes sense to me is the Fair Tax plan which taxes consumption not earning. If you want to read something that will really make sense read The Fair Tax Book by Niel Boortz. Neither candidate supports the Fair Tax plan, but I still choose McCain.

Here are a few more quotes for you to think about:

"The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation." -- Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

"You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves." -- William Boetcker

I will get off my soap box now. I'm not sure if anyone will read this, or even if you care what I think. I guess I just had to get it out there. When you go to vote, ask yourself this. Am I voting to help my country, or am I voting for my country to help me? A vote for Obama is a vote for socialism. A vote for a third party candidate is a vote for Obama.Vote McCain!
